Which silk bonnet for your hair? Curls, braids, blowouts and short hair
Share
The short answer
- Curls, coils, braids, locs, twists or long hair: the Cover. Its 56 cm tail gives the lengths room.
- A blowout or silk press, mid-length to long: the Glow, a twist-front turban in a double layer of silk.
- Short to mid-length hair, straight or wavy, every night: the Comfort, a light rounded bonnet with a ruffle.
All three are cut from the same silk (100% mulberry silk, 22 momme, Grade 6A) and close with the same soft elastic. The shape is the difference, and the shape decides where your hair spends the night.
Which bonnet for which hair, at a glance
Start with the hair you are going to bed with tonight, not only your hair type: the same person may want the Glow after the salon and the Cover on braid week.
| Your hair tonight | Glow (twist-front turban) | Comfort (rounded, with a ruffle) | Cover (long, with a 56 cm tail) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short to mid-length, straight or wavy | Also works | First choice | More room than you need |
| A blowout or silk press, mid-length to long | First choice | For shorter lengths | When the lengths are very long or full |
| Long lengths, an ordinary night | Also works | Can feel full | First choice |
| Curls and coils | For a styled set at mid-length | For short curls | First choice |
| Braids, locs, twists or another protective style | Not the one | Not the one | First choice |
The first choices come from what each bonnet is made for; the rest is our reading of the three shapes. If two columns suit your hair, choose by silhouette: the Glow is the one you would happily wear to breakfast, the Comfort the one you forget you have on, the Cover the one with room for everything.

Silk or satin bonnet: what’s the difference?
Satin is a weave, not a fibre. Many satin bonnets are polyester woven to shine; a silk bonnet is woven from silk itself. When a label says “satin” without naming the fibre, it is often polyester.
Silk is weighed in momme: the higher the number, the denser the fabric. Siluxe bonnets use 22 momme mulberry silk, about 16% more silk per square metre than a typical 19 momme silk, so the fabric feels fuller and more opaque from the first touch. Grade 6A is the highest grade of mulberry silk fibre, long and even. The silk is certified OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100, certificate 26.HCN.36686, tested for harmful substances.

How to put each bonnet on
All three close the same way: a soft elastic, one size, from 54 cm relaxed to 72 cm stretched (about 27 to 36 cm measured flat). There are no ties and no drawstring, and none of them is reversible. The hair goes in dry and loose.
- Glow. The elastic runs along the back; the twist knot sits at the front. Set the back edge at your nape, bring the bonnet up and over so it scoops the hair in, then settle the twist a finger’s width above your hairline.
- Comfort. The elastic runs all the way round under a delicate ruffle. Gather the hair loosely, pull the bonnet on from the back, and let the ruffle sit along the hairline.
- Cover. The elastic is gathered all around the face. Put the cap on first, then lay your lengths, braids or locs into the tail, which falls behind your head and over the pillow.
If the elastic marks your forehead, place it a little further back rather than pulling it tighter. A step-by-step version with pictures is in How to wear a silk bonnet.
Why sleep in a silk bonnet at all?
A bonnet keeps the lengths together, so they do not travel across the pillow, your shoulders and your back all night. The silk then gives them a smooth surface inside. TRI Princeton, an independent hair-science institute, measured lower friction between silk and hair than between cotton and hair, and the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) notes that satin or silk bonnets or pillowcases “may also reduce friction and preserve your hairstyle”.
In our own words: hair glides over silk instead of rubbing, so mornings start with fewer tangles.
If nothing stays on your head at night, a silk pillowcase does the same job from below; Silk pillowcase or bonnet? helps you decide. Keeping a fresh blowout? How long does a blowout last has the evening routine.
How to care for a silk bonnet
Hand wash, or machine wash at 30 °C on a delicate cycle, inside out in a mesh bag, with a pH-neutral silk detergent. No bleach and no fabric softener. Do not wring: press gently in a towel, then dry flat, away from direct sun and heat. No tumble dryer. Iron on low heat if needed.
Find my bonnet: three questions
- Braids, locs, twists, or long curls past your shoulders? The Cover.
- A blowout or silk press to keep until wash day? The Glow.
- Short to mid-length hair, and a bonnet for every night? The Comfort.

FAQ
What size are Siluxe silk bonnets?
One size. All three have a soft elastic opening of 54 cm relaxed to 72 cm stretched, about 27 to 36 cm measured flat. The depth differs: 23 cm for the Glow, 25 cm for the Comfort, and 25 cm for the Cover’s cap, plus its 56 cm tail.
Which silk bonnet is best for curly or coily hair?
The Cover. Its 56 cm tail gives curls and coils room to extend instead of being packed into a round cap. For a styled curl set at mid-length, the Glow also works.
Which silk bonnet is best for braids, locs or twists?
The Cover. It is the only one of the three with a tail, so braids, locs and twists lie inside it at their full length.
Which bonnet keeps a blowout or silk press?
The Glow. It is made for blowouts and silk presses on mid-length to long hair: the double layer of silk gives the turban its shape and holds the lengths in place.
What is the difference between the Glow and the Comfort?
Shape and structure. The Glow is a twist-front turban in a double layer of silk, 23 cm deep. The Comfort is a light, rounded single-layer bonnet with a ruffle, 25 cm deep, made for short to mid-length hair every night.
Silk or satin bonnet: which is better for hair?
Satin names a weave, often polyester; silk is the fibre itself. A silk bonnet gives the hair a smooth surface of real mulberry silk all night. Siluxe bonnets are 100% mulberry silk, 22 momme, Grade 6A.
How do I keep a silk bonnet on all night?
Put it on from the nape, keep the hair inside loose and dry, and choose the shape that fits your hair rather than tightening the elastic. If your hair is long or full, the Cover gives it the most room.
Do I need a silk pillowcase as well?
Not necessarily. A bonnet holds the lengths; a silk pillowcase gives a smooth surface under your face and any strands that escape. Many people use one or the other, and some use both.
How do I wash a silk bonnet?
Hand wash, or machine wash at 30 °C on a delicate cycle in a mesh bag, with a pH-neutral silk detergent; no bleach, no fabric softener, no tumble dryer. Dry flat, away from direct sun.
Where are Siluxe bonnets made?
They are designed in Paris and made in China by our partner silk workshop, from 100% mulberry silk certified OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 (certificate 26.HCN.36686).
