Gifts for a new mother: something for her
Share
The short answer
Give her something for the small pockets of time she has: a silk eye mask for daytime naps, soft scrunchies for hair that goes up all day, a silk pillowcase for the pillow she rests on, or all of it together in a GiftBox. Bring it around the fourth week, when the first wave of visits has passed, and add an offer of practical help.
The flowers arrive in the first week, along with a small mountain of vests in size 0–3 months. Almost everything that comes through the door is for the baby, which is lovely, and also a little telling.
A gift for the mother says something else: we see you too. It does not need to be big. It needs to fit the life she has right now, in which time comes in ten-minute pieces and her hair has been up since six in the morning. Here is what that looks like, gift by gift.
What does a new mother actually use?
Think about her day rather than the occasion. Four things come up again and again.
| Her day | What helps | The gift |
|---|---|---|
| A nap in the afternoon, in a bright room | Darkness, quickly | A silk eye mask |
| Hair up from morning to night | A soft, covered tie | Silk scrunchies, M and L |
| Two minutes for her face, when she gets them | Hair held back | A silk headband |
| The pillow she rests on, by day and by night | A smooth surface | A silk pillowcase |
Daytime naps
NCT, the UK charity for parents, is honest about the old advice to sleep when the baby sleeps: it can feel irritating when there is no telling whether the nap will last five minutes or an hour. Its suggestion is to take short naps where you can, and to prioritise sleep when the baby naps during the day. Daytime means daylight, often in a living room with no curtains to speak of. A silk eye mask brings the dark in a second, and it goes wherever the nap happens.
Hair up, all day
Hair goes up in a knot within minutes of waking and often stays there until night. A thin elastic holds by squeezing; a scrunchie gathers the hair inside a band of fabric. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) advises wearing hair loosely pulled back, with covered bands made for styling hair. Two sizes cover most days: a Medium for a low knot or a braid, a Large for a fuller bun.
Soft surfaces
The pillow she naps on in the afternoon is the pillow she sleeps on at night. A silk pillowcase gives it a smooth surface, and hair glides over silk instead of rubbing, so blowouts last and mornings start with fewer tangles. It is the kind of gift you notice every day without thinking about it.
Two-minute rituals
NCT also reminds new parents that taking time for yourself can feel like self-indulgence, and is not. The gifts that get used are the ones that fit into two minutes: a headband slipped on to hold her hair back while she washes her face, an eye mask for a twenty-minute nap.
Which gift, for which budget?
From the smallest token to the gift a group of friends gives together. Prices show in your currency.
- A scrunchie, tucked into the card. The Medium ($11), Large ($16) or XL ($20), in five colours. See the scrunchies.
- The eye mask. $41, in Rose gold, Gold, Bronze, Burgundy or Silver. Add a scrunchie in the same colour and you have a small, matched gift. See the eye mask.
- The headband. $43, in Rose gold or Gold, for the two minutes at the basin.
- The pillowcase. $99, in Standard 50 × 70 cm or Euro 65 × 65 cm.
- The GiftBox. $162: the pillowcase, the eye mask, a Medium and a Large scrunchie, presented in an ivory box. The obvious choice when colleagues or a group of friends give together. See the GiftBox.
If you do not know her taste, choose the colour of something she wears often. Every GiftBox colourway pairs the small pieces in one colour with a Gold or Rose gold pillowcase.
When is a good time to give a new mother a gift?
The first days bring the most visitors. NCT’s advice to new parents is that it is fine to keep visits few and short, and that visitors can make their own tea, wash up the dishes or hang a load of laundry instead of holding the baby.
Then the house goes quiet. In France, the second parent’s leave is three days of birth leave followed by 25 calendar days of paternity and childcare leave, of which only the first four are compulsory. Taken in one go, that is about four weeks. Around the fourth week the visits thin out, the cards stop, and a gift for her lands at exactly the right moment.
How to give it:
- Send a message first. Offer a time, and say you are happy to leave it at the door.
- Keep the visit short. Twenty minutes, with something for dinner.
- Add an hour. France’s official 1000 premiers jours site suggests that parents lean on the people around them, for shopping or a favour, and have the baby looked after now and then for a little respite. Offer to take the pram round the block while she naps.
- Write the card for her. “For you. Not for the baby.” is enough.

FAQ
What can you buy a new mother for herself?
Something she will use in the small moments she has: a silk eye mask for daytime naps, soft scrunchies for hair that is up all day, a headband for two minutes of skincare, or a silk pillowcase. The Siluxe GiftBox brings the pillowcase, the eye mask and two scrunchies together in one box.
Is a silk eye mask a good gift for a new mother?
Yes, if her naps happen in daylight. The mask brings darkness to a bright room in a second, folds into a bag and suits a twenty-minute rest as well as a night. Choose among five colours: Rose gold, Gold, Bronze, Burgundy and Silver.
When should you give a gift to a new mother?
Any time is kind, but the fourth week is a good moment: the first wave of visits has passed and the house is quieter. Send a message first, keep the visit short, and offer practical help with it, such as dinner or an hour with the baby.
What is in the Siluxe GiftBox?
Four pieces of 100% mulberry silk: the silk pillowcase, the eye mask, a Medium scrunchie and a Large scrunchie, presented in an ivory box. It comes in five colourways, with the pillowcase in Standard 50 × 70 cm, or Euro 65 × 65 cm in three of them.
